Sequence of Events Recording (SER)

Sequence of Events Recording
Analyze cause to quickly restore power
Brochure

The PowerLogic Sequence of Events Recorder (SER) Module is a root-cause analysis tool for rapid response for problem resolution that is ideal for pinpointing the cause of a service disruption in very large complex power systems. SER relies on Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology to time tag electrical or operational events, such as circuit trips, down to the millisecond.

  • Captures events in milliseconds for circuit breakers and relay operations along with the shutdown sequence of generators, compressors, motors, etc.
  • Records event time and state-of-the-point.
  • Consolidates accurate system-wide event records using time synchronization to an external time standard - GPS.
  • Viewable web-client screen, with sorting and filter capability to segregate and pinpoint specific problems in an electrical or production system

Without event sequence information, it can take hours to find the cause and to clear up persistent problems. By recording and capturing millisecond event time stamps, point states, and waveforms, detailed time accurate event sequence information makes it possible to restore a power system much more rapidly and enables users to quickly pinpoint the cause of an outage, clear up persistent problems, and take corrective action to prevent the problem from happening again.

SER relies on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to synchronize the time clocks on the monitoring devices throughout the system. Typically applied at:

  • Point of utility coupling
  • Motors
  • Relays
  • Auto transfer switches
  • Generators
  • Circuit breakers
  • Other high-speed devices

The inputs enable the system to collect electrical or operational events and record within 1 ms providing the exact sequence of events when an incident occurs. Recorded high speed events can then be visualized to gain understanding of what happened and the order in which it occurred. The SER web-enabled user interface allows viewing and filtering of the pertinent information SER events including:

  • High Speed Event Date & Time Stamp (Up to 1 ms Resolution)
  • Quality of Date & Time
  • Description of Event
  • State Value of Event
  • Name of Device Capturing the Event

SER capabilities are frequently deployed in conjunction with load shedding or load preservation automatic power system controls.

How It Works:

  • Circuit Monitor and other event recording device clocks are synchronized to the GPS satellite.
  • Status input events are recorded with accurate millisecond time stamps within the recording devices. Circuit Monitors can also capture waveforms with the event.
  • The Sequence of Events Recorder standalone module can automatically upload and stores the Circuit Monitor event and other device event logs and displays the ms time stamped events in a web browser complete with filtering and sorting capabilities. Or when used in conjunction with System Manager Software comprehensive viewing and analysis of power quality, waveform and other energy and power information is also available.
  • The SER module also supports OPC offering the ability to acquire event data from other systems.

SER Services Available:

  • System design, configuration and startup
  • SER time stamping devices and control cabinets
  • Sequence of Events Recorder browser user interface
  • PowerLogic System Manager Software integration, paging, or custom advanced reports

Typical millisecond time-stamp SER inputs:
circuit breaker status, frequency relays, protective and lockout relays, motor status, generator differential relay, ground fault, voltage phase balance, DC bus voltage relay, other relays and status inputs.
