Arc Flash Studies

Arc Flash Studies
for appropriate levels of Personal Protective Equipment

Square D Power System Engineering offers an arc flash analysis services, performed by professional engineers, to identify approach boundaries and appropriate levels of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for your employees.

According to the requirements outlined in NFPA 70E, which is supported and enforced by NEC, IEEE, and OSHA, PPE is necessary for employees working on or around energized electrical equipment. The level of protection is determined by "arc flash incident energy levels".

Arc Flash incident energy is related to:
  • The amount of arc current that could flow at a particular point in the electrical system
  • The time required for the nearest upstream overcorrect protective device to operate and stop the current flow
  • The distance from the employee to the arc source
Consideration for an Arc Flash Analysis:
  • Arc Flash study has not been performed in the past three years
  • Short circuit, protective coordination studies have not been performed in the past five years
  • Changes have occurred to the electrical distribution system or electric utility system
  • A safety audit is required or the facilities insurance policy is scheduled for renewal
  • Modifications or expansions to the electrical distribution system are being considered
  • Facility desires to improve worker safety and reduce electrical hazards
Advantages:
Provides the PPE Category recommendations for all electrical equipment performed in the analysis which helps take the guess work out of which PPE is required for each piece of equipment.
  • Arc Flash analysis is presented in a clear, easy to understand tabular format in accordance with NFPA 7E and IEEE standard 1584
  • Written report of findings and recommendations including methods to reduce arc flash incident energy levels and enhance worker safety
  • Optional power equipment labels listing PPE Category recommendations for attachment to existing enclosures
  • Optional onsite electrical safety training for your staff
